Helping educators retire faster and better
You Spent Your Career Planning for Others. Let's Plan for You.
Teachers have retirement benefits with their own rules, and small decisions can make a big difference to your income. Brian Lee works with educators in South Elgin, Elgin, St. Charles, Geneva and nearby districts to make those decisions with confidence.
Understand your pension: know what it will pay and which payout option fits your family.
Supplement it wisely: use 403(b) and 457(b) plans or IRAs to close the income gap.
Plan for healthcare: many educators retire before they're eligible for Medicare.
Check Social Security: many Illinois teachers don't pay into it through their teaching job.
Avoid these pitfalls
Common Retirement Mistakes Teachers Make
It's easy to overlook essential planning steps. Here are the key mistakes to avoid.
01
Overestimating the Pension
Many teachers expect their pension alone to be enough. Pensions often provide $20,000 to $50,000 a year, which may not cover everything you need.
02
Forgetting Healthcare Costs
Healthcare is easy to underestimate, especially if you retire before Medicare. Set aside funds for private or supplemental coverage.
03
Not Planning for Inflation
Pension payments are often fixed. You need other investments that can keep pace with rising costs throughout retirement.
04
Ignoring Taxes
Taxes can reach several parts of your retirement income, and not every state is retiree-friendly if you plan to move.
05
Misunderstanding Social Security
About 40% of public school teachers don't pay into Social Security through their teaching job, so don't count on benefits you may not receive.
06
Skipping the Budget
A realistic retirement budget, and a plan for debt, is what turns your savings into the monthly income you want.
07
Not Supplementing the Pension
Maximize 403(b) or 457(b) contributions if available, diversify, and start early to benefit from compound growth.
08
Going It Alone
Investment decisions without ongoing guidance can be costly. An advisor who works with teachers helps you avoid expensive mistakes.

FAQ
Teacher Retirement Questions
Straight answers to common questions from educators.
Ask Brian a QuestionIs my teacher pension enough to retire on?
For many teachers it isn't enough on its own. Pensions often provide $20,000 to $50,000 a year and are usually fixed, so inflation, healthcare and taxes can leave a gap. A plan shows how big that gap is and how to fill it.
Should I contribute to a 403(b) or 457(b)?
If your district offers them, they're two of the best ways to supplement your pension. Contributions grow tax-deferred, and a 457(b) can offer more flexible access if you retire early. Brian can help you decide how much to save and where.
Will I get Social Security as an Illinois teacher?
Many Illinois teachers covered by TRS don't pay into Social Security through their teaching job, so they may not earn benefits from those years. You may still qualify through other work or a spouse's record. Check your own record before counting on it.
How do I cover healthcare if I retire before 65?
You'll need coverage until you're eligible for Medicare, such as a retiree plan, a spouse's plan or private insurance. Build those premiums and out-of-pocket costs into your retirement budget.
Do you work with teachers outside South Elgin?
Yes. Brian works with educators across the Fox Valley and western suburbs, including Elgin, St. Charles, Geneva, Batavia, Bartlett, Naperville and more. Meetings are held online or by phone.
